Last week, SquareOne Training welcomed its very first Year 10 work experience student.
The team was delighted to host Piers, from Wirral Grammar School for Boys, and give him a behind-the-scenes look at how our day-to-day operations run.
To sum up his time with us, we asked Piers to answer a few questions, and to say we were thrilled to read his feedback would be an understatement.
Questionnaire
1. Can you describe a typical day during your time at SquareOne Training?
There isn’t really a typical day for me here at SquareOne, as the wonderful team has allowed me to experience all the different aspects of what they do here. Every day has been a unique experience taster to help me work out which part of office work best suits me.
2. What was the most valuable thing you learned during your work experience?
I think the most valuable thing I have learnt during my work experience with SquareOne is that I really enjoy working in an office on a computer with a group of lovely people around me.
3. What tasks or projects did you enjoy the most, and why?
I enjoyed sitting in on the training courses and evaluating how they were going, as I was able to learn new skills from it, and I really like writing on a computer.
4. How has this experience influenced your thoughts about your future career?
This experience has given me the opportunity to meet many new people, such as Jason from Gardner Systems, who helped me understand what requirements I would need to meet in order to have the best chance to get a job in programming or IT.
5. What skills have you developed or improved during your time here?
Over the week, I have improved my abilities in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Forms, and I have used some new programs for the first time, such as Power BI and Canva.
6. Did anything surprise you about working at SquareOne Training?
Before coming to SquareOne for the first time, I wasn’t expecting to be a part of such a well-knit team.
7. What advice would you give to someone starting their own work experience?
If you’re looking for work experience, I would recommend searching for a placement in the general field/industry you’d like to work in — and if you’re unsure of that, try to find something you’ll enjoy. If you’re struggling to find anything that interests you, ask for help from teachers, friends, or family. The last thing you want is to be stuck in a place you hate, being bored for a week — which makes me all the more grateful for the opportunity to be with SquareOne for the week.

At just 15 years old, we know that stepping into an office environment for the first time can feel daunting, but it was an absolute joy to have Piers join us. He embraced every task with enthusiasm and an open mind.
His hard work and dedication throughout the experience were incredible to see, and we were thrilled to help guide him towards a clearer path for his future.
