New to management? So was I. Here’s how SquareOne’s Team Leader course turned my nerves into excitement and helped me become the kind of manager I’d want to work for.
Stepping into your first managerial role can feel like a daunting feat. It brings more responsibility, greater accountability, and fresh challenges. And, when you’re just starting out, it can be an intimidating challenge.
As a first-time Marketing Manager in my new role at SquareOne Training, my manager encouraged me to attend our latest Team Leader course. The takeaways from those two days completely changed my mindset.
The idea of being someone’s direct manager no longer feels daunting, but instead like an exciting opportunity.
The Course Overview
The Team Leader course is delivered over two insightful days:
- Day 1: Understanding Yourself & Your Team
- Day 2: Communication, Conflict & Performance
Day 1 – Understanding Yourself & Your Team
Day one is all about you.
Through personality, communication, and learning style questionnaires, you gain a deeper understanding of how you operate, and chances are, you’ll be nodding along thinking, “Oh yeah, that’s definitely me.”
Then, you’ll explore the many other types of personalities, communication preferences, and learning styles out there, all with the goal of better understanding the people you manage.
Getting to know your team on this level is crucial for creating a healthy work environment. And not just for your own peace of mind, for theirs too.
You’ll learn the value of understanding each person’s “map of the world”, and how seeing things from their perspective can help you support them better. At the end of the day, work can take up over 40 hours of our lives each week; as managers, it’s our responsibility to make that time meaningful, productive, and positive.
Day 2 – Communication, Conflict & Performance
Day two dives into the trickier side of leadership.
The reality is, management is as much about dealing with challenges as it is about celebrating successes. That includes addressing problems and having honest conversations.
You might walk into the session feeling nervous, especially if you’ve had negative experiences with previous managers. But you’ll leave with the confidence to be the kind of leader you would want to work for.
The day begins with essential communication tools, including listening skills, questioning techniques, and how to ensure clarity in every conversation. From there, you’ll learn how to spot the early warning signs of conflict and how to resolve issues effectively.
While leadership comes with its challenges, it also brings the incredibly rewarding experience of helping others reach their full potential.
Great managers inspire and support. They guide their teams through career development, offer positive reinforcement, and share what they’ve learned along the way.
If you’ve been chosen for a leadership position, it’s because someone saw your potential. This course helps you unlock and elevate those leadership skills.
With real-life examples, guided exercises, and reflective discussions, you’ll leave with a toolkit of strategies and insights you may never have considered before.
My Key Takeaway?
Communication is KEY.
To be a successful manager, you must communicate clearly and consistently. Good communication doesn’t just solve problems; it often prevents them in the first place.
Whether you’re transitioning into leadership or looking to strengthen your existing skills, this course will help you lead with clarity, empathy, and confidence.
