Standard Practice – Initial Design Exercise

  • You will complete an Inventor part and assembly model, verifying your knowledge of Inventor standard practices.

Advanced Part Modelling

  • Advanced lofts, area lofts, sweeps, coils, revolves, tips for working with cylindrical forms

Advanced Work Features and Best Practices

  • Grounded work points
  • 3D sketching, creating geometry using a UCS
  • Best approaches for patterning and constraining components and features in parts

Copying Between Parts – iFeatures

  • Create, insert, edit iFeatures, table-driven iFeatures


  • iPart creation and placement
  • Editing an iPart factory
  • Creating iFeatures from a Table-driven iPart

Working Effectively with Assemblies

  • Minimising constraint errors, best approach to patterning and constraining components and features in assemblies

Derived Components

  • Create new geometry in a part by importing and referencing objects
  • Methods for modifying a derived component

Associative Links and Adaptive Parts

  • Overview and best practices


  • Use constraints to define how a component connects with other components, iMate best practices

Positional Representations

  • Create and edit positional representations by overriding existing settings of an assembly, best practices

Model Simplification

  • Use shrink wrapping, model simplification techniques

Level of Detail and Productivity Tools

  • LOD representations – using substituting
  • BOM structures and parts lists

Advanced File Management

  • Design Assistant, options, Pack & Go, purging, copy design

Assembly Duplication

  • Mirror, pattern and copy components

Working with Spreadsheets and Parameters

  1. Relate size and position dimensions with and between parts
  2. Embed a spreadsheet with parameters into an Inventor file

Inventor Studio

  • Control settings to render realistic images and animations
  • Apply backgrounds and lights, define camera views
  • Apply parameters, constraints and actions to show animated range of motion or assembly processes

Application Lab and Additional Q & A

  • Extended application lab to reinforce skills covered, applying them to your own part and assembly design.
